Characteristics of the Saluki
The Saluki is a medium sized dog with a height of 23-28 inches (58-71 cm) and weighs 40-60 pounds (18-27 kg). They have a long and narrow head with large eyes and folded ears.
Their coat comes in a variety of colors including white, cream, brown, red, brown, black/ brown, and tricolor (white, black and brown). The overall appearance of the Saluki is graceful. Their hair is smooth and silky, with little shedding compared to other breeds.
The Saluki is admired for its exotic appearance, but not everyone is fit to live with this independent hunter. Salukis are known to be excellent hunters. Any movement, possibly by a squirrel or a cat, can trigger the Saluki’s hunting instincts. Their speed can measure up to 30-35 miles per hour.
The Saluki would prefer to stay at home on a soft or a bed. They like being comfortable, lying on the cushion to relax their skinny body.
The Saluki is calm and gentle but may become timid if not socialized early. It is quiet but still very alert. The Saluki may be good guard, but it is not a guard dog.
It is possible to train Salukis, but you cannot expect a complete obedience from them like Golden Retrievers. You should use positive ways such as rewarding food and praising them. Never be harsh with them through words or actions.
